SUNGATE® 400

Passive Low-E Glass

The perfect balance of energy efficiency and interior comfort for cooler climates.

Sungate® 400 Passive Low-E Glass

With its extensive background in multiple glass coating technologies, Vitro Architectural Glass (formerly PPG glass) has the ability to continually refine products to meet the needs of homeowners in a range of climates. Sungate® 400 glass is a superb example of that expertise.

Building on decades of proven technology and performance, Sungate® 400 passive low-e glass is engineered to meet Canadian ENERGY STAR® requirements, as well as the increasingly rigorous demands for energy-efficient windows in northern U.S. climates.

With a winter nighttime U-value of 0.28, Sungate® 400 glass helps homes trap winter furnace heat up to 41% more effectively than standard double-pane insulating glass units fabricated with clear glass. The same coating also cultivates a feeling of warmth and comfort in homes by allowing almost 70% of the sun’s heat energy to pass through, along with nearly 80% of the available daylight.

The benefits of Sungate® 400 glass remain when days get longer and warmer, too. In the spring and summer, Sungate® 400 glass continues to deliver lower energy costs by blocking solar heat and transmitting high levels of sunlight. That not only diminishes demand for air-conditioning, while also cutting the electricity bill for lighting.

For even greater year-round insulating performance, homeowners can insist on windows made with Sungate® 400 glass and Intercept® Warm-Edge Spacers by Vitro glass. With the industry’s highest thermal performance rating, Intercept® spacers deliver the added benefits of reduced heat transfer, less condensation and enhanced durability to protect your window investment for years to come.

Glass Comparison

Sungate® 400 double insulating glass unit vs. standard clear double insulating glass unit
Solar Heat Gain Coefficient
Visible Light
Ultraviolet Energy
Winter Furnace Heat
Standard Insulating Glass Unit Sungate® 400 Insulating Glass Unit Benefits
Solar Heat Gain Coefficient 0.75 0.68 Maintains 68% transmittance of solar heat energy for warmth during winter and reduce cooling energy costs
Visible Light Transmittance 81% 78% Allows high level of visible light transmittance and exterior clear glass appearance
U-Value 0.48 0.28 Insulates as much as 42% better than standard clear insulating glass
Ultraviolet Energy 58% 32% Eliminates 68% of UV transmittance, a common contributor to fabrics, carpet and furniture fading

Damage Weighted Transmittance * 0.74 0.64 Minimizes the total potential for fading damage by 14%
*Damage Weighted Transmittance is calculated according to a function called Tdw-ISO, developed by the International Standards Organization (ISO) and published by the International Commission on Illumination (CIE), the world’s leading technical organization on lighting and illumination. The Tdw-ISO calculation measures fading risk from solar radiation across the entire solar light spectrum, from UV light (280-380 nanometers) through visible light (390-780 nanometers). According to the CIE standard, which is considered more comprehensive than UV rating alone, Sungate® 400 glass can minimize fading damage across the entire solar spectrum more effectively than glass designed primarily to block UV light.

All comparisons are center of glass based on an insulating unit containing 3/4" insulating units; two 1/8" (3mm) glass lites and a 1/2" (12mm) air-filled space for the standard clear insulating glass and 90% argon gas-filled space for the Sungate® 400 insulating glass. Actual glass performance may differ due to glass thickness, gas fill and glass to frame ratio.
